My wife Jill and I were first introduced to Great Harvest Bread while living in Owensboro, Kentucky. I was a high school teacher and basketball coach and Jill was a claims adjustor for State Farm Insurance. One of Jill’s co-workers brought a loaf of Pecan Cinnamon Swirl to the State Farm office one day. Jill tried it for the first time and liked the bread so much she picked up a loaf to bring home to our family that evening. From that point on the Baughn family has been hooked on Great Harvest Bread.
Life in Owensboro was a challenge, but rewarding. In between ballgames, work schedules, church activities and our two boys, Cooper and Carter’s, school activities, Jill and I found our family pulled in many different directions. We entertained the idea of finding a more family friendly lifestyle.
In the spring of 2004, we decided to make some changes. I stepped down from a teaching and basketball coach position and Jill put in for a transfer to State Farm’s regional office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. After being granted the transfer, the Baughn family moved to Murfreesboro in the summer of 2004. I found a teaching position at La Vergne high school in Rutherford County and Jill went to work at State Farm.
Still in pursuit of a more family friendly lifestyle, we asked ourselves – “Why not open a Great Harvest Bread Company in Murfreesboro.” I had been a personal friend and running partner with the owner, Greg Garrard, of the Owensboro Great Harvest Bread store. After several conversations with Greg, a few visits to other Great Harvest bakeries, and some research on the company, we, as a family decided to chase the idea of opening Great Harvest Bread Store.
It didn’t take long before Jill and I had fallen in love with the core values, the philosophy, the mission and most of all the people of Great Harvest. We learned quickly that Great Harvest was more than just a store; it was a way of life.
On September 8th, 2006, Jill and I saw our dream come to fruition. I went from teaching kids the game of basketball to teaching employees how to knead and bake bread. And although Jill remains full time with State Farm Insurance, she still stays heavily involved in the bakery doing what she does best – “Winning the hearts of Murfreesboro to Great Harvest Bread and its way of life.”
Welcome to the Great Harvest Bread Company experience!
